Cinemateca
The challenge of this project was redesigning Cinemateca
Portuguesa's visual identity, a major national institution
tasked with conserving, researching, and promoting film
heritage. The task was to create a contemporary aesthetic that
mediates between the institution's history and modern
cinema-going culture. The design makes allusion to the vintage
RGB color model, red and blue 3D glass lenses, a ubiquitous
cinema and cinematic escapism signifier. These vessels of rich
color were used to create an energetic and visually striking
identity that responds to the character of film as art and a
cultural product. Mediating between strong, contemporary
sensibilities and discreet nods to cinematic history, the new
identity commends the Cinemateca Portuguesa for trying to
conserve and celebrate the history of cinema while embracing a
new public.
